Rhinebeck Family Garden
Following a major house build on a dramatic site in Upstate New York, this project required the complete development of the landscape from the rubble that remained. This Rhinebeck home, with its distinctive facade, was the captivating focus for a comprehensive design that extends entirely around the property. The scope was to transition the site from a construction zone into a cohesive and established setting that both softend and enveloped the house.
A new driveway, lined with Pyrus calleryana 'Chanticleer', defines the initial experience of the property. The boundary has been reinforced with a mixed screen of Thuja occidentalis 'Nigra' and Carpinus betulus for privacy that will develop as planting matures. At the house, the entrance is framed by the parking court, which is zoned by clipped Carpinus hedges, while newly developed borders flank the front entrance and stairs. The extensive herbaceous borders utilised a curated planting palette inspired by the house colours which include a blend of Salvia nemorosa ‘Caradonna’, Echinacea purpurea, Anemone ‘Honorine Jobert’, and deciduous grasses chosen for robust, year-round interest. This project represents a total property transformation, balancing functional accessibility with a mature, structural softscape.
